My name is Cuka and I am a baby howler monkey living at the Jaguar Rescue Center. I came here after my mama was forced to abandon me because I was very sick. After some medical care and lots of snuggles from my new human parents Encar and Sandro I am pleased to report that I am very happy and healthy with all my new “sisters” at the center. Each day we all go out to the jungle and interact with the wild monkeys there. We swing from branches and eat leaves and learn all the valuable skills we will need when we are released back into the wild. Did you know that Howler monkeys are vegetarian and the our loud howling can be heard up to three miles away? I would love for you to come visit me and learn all about my animal friends at the Jaguar Rescue Center. We have baby sloths, wildcats, snakes, owls, an oligno and so many more. There are two tours at 9:30am and 11:30am Monday through Saturday and one of the few places in all of Costa Rica you can have a baby monkey sit on your head! We are in Playa Chiquita, only a short ride out of Puerto Viejo and we are open rain or shine. Tell them Cuka sent you!
Love xoxo, Cuka
ps. Here are some fun animal facts and pictures of my friends
![]() The Jaguar Rescue Center is not a zoo, it is a center where we heal rescued animals, and then when the time is right, we return the animals back into their environment. |
![]() Snakes are not slimy and cold as you think, they are totally dry. Their skin is soft to the touch and in the case of boas, pythons and many others, they feel like silk! |
![]() Monkeys are primates like humans. They are our first cousins and they deserve great respect. |
![]() The animals that the center receives are mostly monkeys, sloths, felines, porcupines, snakes, and birds such as toucans and birds of prey. |
![]() Snakes are not aggressive animals but defensive. All bites are by accident, if one was stepped on for example as you pass nearby. |
![]() The animals reach the center in very different ways and range from babies abandoned by their parents, to adult animals that have been wounded by humans as we impact more and more of their environment! |
